Risks to Helpers

Speaking up against family violence may have serious consequences. All Types of Family Violence are serious issues that may end in crime scenes. There are risks for helpers, as well as for victims and abusers. It’s important to be fully aware of the situation and the possible consequences.

We feel it's your duty to help your friends or family members, but we want you to know what you're getting into is tough.

Getting involved puts pressure on you to stay involved.
 It can take a lot of time and energy to help remedy the situation. Know your own boundaries and abilities. What you discover from listening to your friend may weigh heavily on you. Make sure you have the support you need. Seek help from another trustworthy friend or professional if you need it.

Your friend or family member may get upset.
 Taking a stand is never easy. You know your friend, so take the actions that are most comfortable for you both.

You may not see results right away.
These things take time and patience.
