True Love in Marriage – A Mirage, Why?

Fulfillment of human needs emanate from love. Love in this world is short lived; especially in a marriage. To love for Al-Wadud, for the sake of The Loving God in unison and to achieve love in this relationship is the most fulfilling pursuit of life. All other worldly pursuits are a mirage that consumes our energy and purpose.

In the absence of sincerely honoring each other in a marriage in order to honor Allah SWT, doubts and distrust surface up and erode the foundation of mawaddah – mutual love and compassion that guarantees perpetual happiness on this earthly life; thus, destroying the bond, that the Prophet SW said completes our faith and purpose.

The foundation of a marriage on a personal calculation falls apart and brings home the lesson that permanence of a relationship comes through the commitment to God to abide by His Grand Scheme of multiplying humanity and maintaining lovingly merciful relationship.

Divergence in Love

Tears rolled in our eyes when we parted.
You didn’t look back and I didn’t say goodbye.
I stood at the gate watching you leave in twilight.
I left the door open that you may come back.
I lit the candles in my window every evening,
and I saw your face in the flickering light.

Remember, when you told me a story of love
different from every other story I had heard.
We both thought that our love would be immortal,
and our story would live in our hearts forever.
Were we over-estimating our faith in each other,
or was it a mirage that we were running after?

Gradually, we drifted as water from the land,
and felt lonely in each other’s company.
My words had no meanings,
and my concerns weighed heavy on you.
You brought me sunflower and I wanted roses.
What I liked, you thought it shouldn’t be.

Alas! I forgot your face and locked the door.
I never lit the candles in my window again.
I learned that not seeking His pleasure,
brought me to the end of the cliff.
I turned to Him in desperation to fill the void in my heart,
and evidently saw the Truth.
